Music Audition Tips

Whether you are preparing for a college audition or musical theater audition, it can be overwhelming! Auditions are just like a job interview, In two to ten minutes, the individual hosting the audition wants to be able to determine if you are what they are looking for.

No matter if you are preparing an audition for musical theater role, college music program or to get into a performing arts school-We can help you! Here are a few tips to remember when preparing for your upcoming audition:

    • When preparing for an audition, it’s best to get as early of a start as possible. Preparing 4 weeks or more before your audition will yield best results. Even with previous music experience, early preparation takes time because each audition has it’s own specific requirements for the type of music you will need to learn. Some auditions may require that you prepare a song in a different language, some may require you sing certain scales, others may require you to sing an unfamiliar style.
    • When reviewing the audition requirements, look carefully at all that is required for adequate preparation. Many auditions will have a list of required songs as well as singing songs that show your own style and
    • The song you choose to sing for your audition should be a song that shows your voice and/or musical ability at it’s best!! Not something that you would be afraid to do but something you are confident doing. Do you have a strong and powerful voice or a voice that can sing really low? Are you able to play very fast on the piano keys or very smooth legato on violin! Highlight your best features about your musical ability.
    • Professional, nice and neat is the way to go for your audition. Think of your audition as just like a job interview except it’s a music interview. You don’t have to dress in a suit but nice and neat will make sure that you make a good first impression. If you are auditioning for a role in a play or show make sure to find out if you should dress the part of the character you are auditioning for.
    • You want to get adequate sleep and hydration because you will be able to calm your nerves much better when you are well rested. Hydrating is not only great for singers but any musician will benefit from hydration. Drink the recommended daily allowance of water during the days leading up to your audition and you will feel nice and relaxed and balanced on the day of your audition.

Here’s one of our students recently accepted in NWSA!! Congrats Logen!
