Drum Lessons

We offer private drum lessons in percussion including focus on drumset, snare drum, hand percussion, and marching percussion. Lessons are offered to students of different ages and at varying levels of skills and experience. Although there are special cases, most students are not physically ready to begin studying percussion instruments until they are 7 or 8 years old. In private lessons, students will progress at their own rate and will be taught a variety of skills critical to percussion playing, based on their instrument of choice. These skills include basic hand/foot technique, rhythmic analysis, melodic/harmonic analysis, and correct posture. Emphasis will also be placed on developing good practice skills and habits. For those completely new to music, general concepts such as note-reading, symbol recognition, rhythm, and musicianship will be taught and understood before advanced concepts will be introduced.
While many percussion students are just learning to play for enjoyment, some may also participate in school band, orchestra, or other ensembles within the community. Students that take private lessons tend to be at the top level in their sections and display a much greater knowledge and skill than those who do not study privately. There are simply too many percussion instruments for a general music teacher to cover during rehearsal. Most band and orchestral students only have to learn one instrument, but percussion students will encounter a wide range of instruments such as snare drum, bass drum, cymbals, xylophone, bells, triangle tambourine, timpani, and many more. Lessons and Studio Class will give the student a chance to obtain the appropriate amount of instruction for each instrument as needed.
All students will need an instrument to practice on at home. Drum set students must own their own drum set and band and orchestral students will need at least a snare drum and maybe a set of bells. These are often provided and/or rented by your school music program. If you need recommendations on what to purchase, we are happy to help!
